Attaining these roles necessitated a commitment to expanding educational horizons.  Undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology provided insight into motivational processes that are now utilized in the training techniques employed by MJS.  Professional education led to achieving and maintaining national certification as a Physician Assistant (PA).   PA's must successfully complete at least 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and must undertake board examinations.  MJS has more than 1800 hours of CME credit and has successfully maintained certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.  He was awarded the designation as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (DFAAPA) in 2008.  Prior to that in 1992 MJS was recognized by the Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants as PA of the Year.  In 2010 MJS was enshrined in the TAPA Hall of Fame.  Two years later MJS accepted the challenge to incorporate his life lessons into a developing graduate program for PA's.  The university recognized the "outstanding contributions" of MJS naming him the recipient of The Brother Bernard LoCoco Presidential Chair.

These life experiences have afforded opportunities that provide a basis upon which appropriate and applicable lessons are delivered.  With more than 30 years experience as an instructor for the American Heart Association he has perfected the delivery of engaging hands-on materials receiving outstanding evaluations  from course participants (see "Participant Evaluation Comments") in multiple settings such as:
